2013 Offering of Letters

posted Mar 24, 2013, 7:20 PM by James Christensen   [ updated May 10, 2013, 6:27 PM ]

Faith UCC is a Bread for the World Covenant Church. On April 28 and May 5, fifty-one adults, youth and children wrote 91 letters to our senators and representatives, asking that a plan be developed to end hunger here and abroad, and that a balanced approach to deficit reduction include sufficient funding for programs that reduce hunger and poverty.
This year Bread for the World is an alliance partner for A Place at the Table, a feature-length documentary about the persistence of hunger in America.
Bread for the World's Biblical Reflection for this year concludes: “Even in our rapidly changing world, God’s intention for human wholeness remains. Abundance and provision are in our midst. Yet, while there is enough food in the world for everyone to eat, many of God's people do not have access to the food they need."

Lent 2013

posted Feb 1, 2013, 11:29 AM by James Christensen

Attached below you will find a (very!) full schedule of all the special activities and events at Faith UCC during the season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 13.
Pastor Gene McAfee says: "Lent is the time in the church year when we clear away some of the demanding non-essentials and remind ourselves of those aspects of our lives that matter most. When we do that – when we prioritize our wants, needs, and commitments – we discover that there are many things we can easily manage without – indeed, we are better off without – leaving us more time, energy, and attention to devote to the things that are essential for our spiritual, as well as our material, lives. Both our attention to hospitality and our immersion in the Psalms this Lent are intended to help us sharpen our focus on our chief priorities."

Co-sponsored by Faith UCC, Gerry’s House of the Western Reserve Association, and Hillcrest Area Churches, Brinton will share with us hospitality insights he gained from his research at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, Saddleback Church, the Iona Community, and elsewhere.
In addition, the Adult Study group of Faith UCC will conduct a study of Brinton's book at 9:30AM on Sunday mornings, beginning on February 10.

MLC goes paperless!

posted Mar 23, 2012, 6:00 PM by James Christensen   [ updated Mar 23, 2012, 6:02 PM ]

The Ministries Leadership Council (MLC) held its first paperless meeting on Tuesday, March 13th.  Utilizing Internet technology developed by the MLC Web Team, the Council was able to project from its files on the church website all the documents needed for its deliberations.  This is a milestone for our church, and all ministries are encouraged to go green as we try to honor our stated commitment to the care of God's creation.  The planet thanks you.

Circle of Protection

posted Mar 5, 2012, 7:23 PM by James Christensen   [ updated Apr 13, 2012, 5:18 PM ]

On April 15 and April 22, we will write handwritten letters to our elected representatives in Washington advocating protection for funding for programs that help hungry and poor people lift themselves out of poverty.
Faith UCC is a Bread Covenant Church and our Bread Team -- Marilyn Glover, Rick Lorenz, Chris Wilkinson and Pat Bacon -- hopes this extended period of preparation will invite both greater understanding of the advocacy ministry of Bread for the World and how our faith in Jesus Christ shapes the lives we lead.
Bread writes, “When we steward our influence and urge our nation’s leaders to transform social structures and protect society’s most vulnerable people, we love God and our neighbor. Christians can create a circle of protection around people in need and strengthen the moral dignity of our nation’s programs and policies."
Expanding the Circle of Protection is the focus of Bread for the World's Offering of Letters 2012. This overall focus is in response to deficit-reduction proposals that Congress is considering, which could result in severe cuts to programs for hungry and poor people in this country and abroad. Bread is a founding partner of the Circle of Protection, a coalition of Christian denominations and religious organizations who are advocating for the protection of programs vital to hungry and poor people.
Bread writes, “When we steward our influence and urge our nation’s leaders to transform social structures and protect society’s most vulnerable people, we love God and our neighbor. Christians can create a circle of protection around people in need and strengthen the moral dignity of our nation’s programs and policies."
Within this broader campaign are 4 mini-campaigns that address specific legislative topics before Congress.  Each of them will be introduced with a brief DVD on the following Sundays:
March 11 - Domestic Nutrition Assistance Programs - including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly called food stamps) and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women and Children (WIC).
March 18 - Poverty-focused Foreign Assistance - (only .6% of federal budget)
March 25 - Tax Credits for Low-Income Families - Help low-income workers lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
April 1 - International Food Aid Programs - including Food for Peace and McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition.
